Case Description
In response to the Covid-19 crisis, the local government of Kalaw city in Myanmar found a solution for local food sellers to keep functioning during the lockdown in less crowded circumstances. A road in the city center was repurposed for an open-air market, dividing the street into sections with painted lines, keeping the vendors within 1,8 meters of distance from each other, and allowing the customers to navigate within the market safely. This simple solution for safe market activities became an example for other cities in South-East Asia.
Relation to Resilience
The solution was important for food sellers to continue their business and support their livelihoods. Also it would have been too costly for governments to to provide the poor with food instead of the markets.
