Case Description
The design collective JAJAxD developed a simple idea for people to enjoy public beaches while keeping appropriate distance during the Covid-19 pandemic. With a colorful nylon ribbon and three to four wooden pegs as support elements, the ‘Beachbealt kit’ enables people to demarcate their own safe space on the sand. It can be used by a single person as well as by families or other groups that consider themselves to be part of the same ‘bubble’.
Relation to Resilience
The design aspires to give agency to beachgoers, providing the opportunity for people to seek their own spot, while still encouraging them to live up to social distancing rules. As such, the Beachbelt kit enables people to reconnect with others and with a natural environment like the beach, after a period of isolation.
